Fast Charge: The Galaxy S24 line of smartphones may have the first practical GenAI features.

In November 2023, Samsung unveiled Galaxy AI, a new Generative AI-based model that promises to provide a “universal intelligence on your phone” and a “comprehensive mobile AI experience.” However, we haven’t seen Galaxy AI in action yet.

During its announcement, Samsung did offer some intriguing demonstrations of the technology’s potential while highlighting its emphasis on creativity, productivity, and communication.

One particular example, called AI Live Translate Call, will function similarly to Google’s Live Caption feature on its Pixel range but without requiring an active internet connection. It will translate text and audio during phone calls in real-time.

Additionally, Bixby, Samsung’s virtual assistant, is probably going to gain from on-device AI capabilities. As for the gallery or camera apps, we’re probably going to see some GenAI integration, though it’s unclear exactly how.

That should alter, though, when the Samsung Galaxy S24 range is revealed, which the company recently confirmed will happen on January 17, 2024.

“Samsung has strongly indicated that it will include Galaxy AI in its flagship lineup for 2024, even though it hasn’t explicitly stated so. “Additionally, this perfect alignment corresponds with the chipsets supposedly intended for inclusion in the next collection.”

According to those rumours, depending on your geographical location, the Galaxy S24 range is allegedly based on either the Samsung Exynos 2400 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, two chipsets that enable on-device Gen AI capabilities. Users in the UK and Europe will receive the Exynos version, while those in the US will receive the Snapdragon variant.

At its October 2023 announcement, Qualcomm made a big deal out of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s on-device GenAI capabilities. The company showcased a number of use cases for AI on smartphones, such as a virtual assistant that can take notes, summarise phone calls, and even “zoom out” on previously taken photos by using AI to analyse and intelligently fill the frame.

“The Exynos 2400 is reportedly on par with the Exynos 2200 chipset regarding Gen AI capabilities, according to Samsung. The company states that the chipset, created with GenAI in mind, possesses 15x more AI power than the Exynos 2200 chipset. The company has also demonstrated similar achievements, including text-to-image generation and standard text generation.”

Having said that, it appears that the S24 range will have strong GenAI capabilities for Samsung’s Galaxy AI to benefit from, independent of chipset specifics.

Additionally, Samsung stated during the Galaxy AI reveal that the technology would be available on phones “early next year,” which corresponds exactly with the S24 range’s January 2024 reveal. Thus, it’s practically a given at this point.

It’s especially exciting because, despite the fact that flagship GenAI-capable chips like the Exynos 2400, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and Dimensity 9300 are starting to show up in devices, companies like Vivo and Xiaomi have not yet integrated Gen AI features into their respective operating systems.

We’ll have to wait and see for sure, but the S24 range from Samsung looks like it’s ready to make a big splash when it comes to artificial intelligence in smartphones in 2024.
